Horrifying video captured the moment a chair swing ride in Russia collapsed — injuring about 20 people, including at least two in critical condition.
The carousel’s roof, which held the chained swings, fell as the ride in the southwestern city of Orenburg was spinning at top speed on Sunday, East2West News reported.
Bystanders rushed to help pull the riders from the mangled remains of the amusement park ride. At least eight children were hurt.
A 27-year-old woman was listed in “extremely grave” condition and a 10-year-old girl in “grave” condition was expected to undergo surgery, according to the news outlet.
The carousel, which local outlets reported was 17 years old, was one of the rides featured in the fairground in Orenpark.
“We don’t know yet what caused the accident. But already now it is clear that there are serious questions to those in charge of the safety of the rides,” a local official said, according to the outlet.
“What has happened is simply unacceptable,” he added. “Health and safety of the citizens is our priority. Those responsible for what has happened should certainly be punished.”
Park director Timur Shogenov insisted before the incident that all the rides were safe.
“There is no need to worry,” he said. “It is all safe. All rides are subject to state checks and technical certification.”
